Some leather looks vivid even in old age. This doesn't. The hide has settled into something quieter, a muted, ashy grey-brown, the colour a fire takes on long after the flame has gone, when only warmth and a little smoke remain. It's hand-finished in the workshops of Jodhpur, worked until the surface carries faint scratches and softened patches, the kind of wear that looks earned rather than added. Deep diamond tufting runs the full length of the back and seat, each fold catching a slightly different shade of grey. The arms scroll in the traditional way, turned bun feet grounding the whole piece low to the floor. Set against pale stone or whitewashed walls, its faded tone reads as restraint rather than age. In a Hampstead study, or a Mayfair room kept deliberately quiet, it sits the way embers do, spent, but still giving off a little warmth.
