Some leather looks dyed all the way through, flat and even. This doesn't. The tone shifts as it catches light, amber in one fold, deepening to a burnt orange in the next, as though the colour were coming from somewhere beneath the surface rather than sitting on top of it. The hide is hand-burnished in the workshops of Jodhpur, worked until that variegation becomes permanent, then drawn into deep diamond tufting across the back and seat. The arms scroll generously, brass nailheads tracing their full curve, and the legs turn down to small brass castors, a detail more often found on furniture meant to be moved than admired. Set beneath warm lamplight or against dark, patterned walls, its colour does most of the work. In a Mayfair drawing room thick with evening light, it looks as though it's glowing quietly on its own.
